Xiaomi works very closely with the community and often time recruits some dedicated fans to test out a brand new Android update. The company recently began recruiting Xiaomi Mi 6 owners who wanted to test a close beta version of Android Oreo based on MIUI’s China Alpha ROM. Today, they are looking for people who own the Xiaomi Mi A1 Android One smartphone to test a stock version of Android Oreo that they are currently working on.

Beta testing unreleased versions of Android is something that has become more and more popular these days. This wasn’t something that was common a few years ago until Google started delivering developer preview builds to the community. Since then, we’ve seen companies including Samsung, LG, Nokia, Xiaomi, OnePlus and many others following Google’s example. This allows customers to get their hands on new versions of Android while also helping the OEM out by reporting some bugs and glitches that they come across.

Xiaomi recently joined the Android One program with the release of the Mi A1. They’ve been recruiting beta testers for unreleased versions of MIUI for a while now so it makes sense that they begin doing the same for their first Android One smartphone. If you own the Xiaomi Mi A1, then Xiaomi would like you to submit an application to see if you’re eligible for the beta test. This requires that you provide them your IMEI number and then download the Xiaomi MIUI Forum application from the Play Store.

Once installed, go ahead and open it up and then launch the Recruitment page. You’ll be asked to fill out a few things including your IMEI number, what times you use the device, your region, and  a reason why you feel you would be a good beta tester. With that done, just tap the submit button and your application will be sent in.

Chargers looking for health, honesty from Novak – The San Diego Union

The Chargers need to trust Nick Novak.

They need to trust him to line up and knock the football through the uprights. They need to trust him to handle kickoff duties. They need to trust he’ll come through when it matters most.

And, this week, they’ll need to trust Novak when he tells the team how he feels.

The Chargers will work out kickers Tuesday, coach Anthony Lynn said, as the team continues to monitor Novak’s injured back. He injured the back Thursday during warmups in Dallas, he said.

Cleveland Browns, and it’ll be on the Chargers to decide whether to believe him.

“I consider myself tough and it’s something I’m going to certainly fight through,” Novak said. “I want to help this team. I think this team is doing very well. At this point in my career, I’m in a very good place. The last thing I want is to ever miss a game. This run, I think, is going to be a fun one. I’m definitely going to fight through.”

But trusting Novak and his self-evaluation isn’t cut and dry. As a kicker, Novak’s spot on the roster is tenuous, at best, especially considering how the Chargers have performed at that position this year.

NFL. The team is also a league-worst 1-of-6 from between 40 and 49 yards. And only five teams have attempted fewer kicks from 50 yards or more than the Chargers, who are 1-for-2.

“We need to make every single one of them,” Lynn said of kicks. “You have to make 50-(yard), 50-plus field goals in this league to win. I was watching the games this past weekend, and they’re hitting from 55, 56, 57 (yards) to win a game. You have to be able to make those kicks.”

And, the Chargers don’t even like trying them.

Lynn said the Chargers would prefer to have a healthy Novak on the roster, but if not, they won’t be unprepared like they were on Thanksgiving when punter Drew Kaser had to placekick for the first time in his life.

“I wouldn’t count that out, having two kickers on the roster right now. I would not count that out because we need an insurance policy,” Lynn said. “What happened last week, I don’t want that to happen again.”

Wide receiver Mike Williams, who left Thursday’s game with a knee injury, is “day-to-day,” according to Lynn. Williams’ right knee is still sore, Lynn said, and he wasn’t participating during the open period of Monday’s practice. … Lynn said right tackle Joe Barksdale’s foot is sore, but he expects him to be fine in time for Sunday’s game. … Lynn said the AFC West is still “a really tough division.” “We’ve beat each other up a little bit,” he said. “We’ve lost some close games. Simogo has been vocal about how supporting iOS 11 and now iPhone X has been for them. They’ve even commented about how it has affected their development of newer projects. Today they finally spoke about specific games like and The Sailor’s Dream [$3.99] and what their plans are for them. In addition to those games, they are figuring out how to work their first three games on the iPhone X tall screen. I’m curious to see how they manage some of their games on the tall display for sure.

Simogo also spoke about how they need to draw the line somewhere on reworking older games for new devices. In some cases it isn’t financially viable. This year in particular has been interesting seeing both apps and games get updates on the iOS side of things because while initially it was just iOS 11 or 64-bit support that was needed, it is now about supporting a new aspect ration and screen size on iOS.

I hope Simogo finds the updates worthwhile because I’m a big fan of their games. Their next game is currently called Project Night Road. Hopefully we hear more about that in the future. We will post about the updates when they go live but for now this is all the information available about Simogo’s plans for the iPhone X.

iPhone With Dual-SIM Support Due in 2018, Apple Looking to Intel …

Amid the success story of the iPhone X, Apple is now reported to be bringing new iPhone models in 2018 with dual-SIM support. The Cupertino company is also rumoured to be in talks with Intel to provide 5G modems on a future iPhone to deliver a faster experience.

Supporting two networks with dual-SIM card slots is quite common among handsets developed by companies like Samsung and Xiaomi. But if we believe the latest research note by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the iPhone models that would be debuted in the second half of 2018, as the successors of the iPhone X, will include dual-SIM support with dual-standby technology. Kuo stated that unlike the existing dual-SIM offerings that generally had a combination of LTE and 3G connectivity, Apple was planning to bring support for two LTE networks consequently to enhance user experience.

The note, as reported by Mac Rumors, also points to the expanded reliability on Intel for developing 70 to 80 percent of the baseband chips for future iPhone models. Kuo believes that Apple is particularly opting for Intel’s XMM7560 in addition to Qualcomm’s SDX 20 models to make wireless connectivity on new the iPhone versions faster than their existing models.

FastCompany, in a separate report, claims that for a future iPhone model, Apple is opting an Intel 5G modem. Citing a source with a knowledge familiar to the development, the report highlights that instead of relying on Qualcomm to enable faster connectivity, Apple engineers are considering Intel’s 5G modem as the best-fit for the future iPhone.

It is unclear whether the 5G-enabled iPhone model will be debuted in 2018. However, it appears certain that Apple is looking to reduce reliance on Qualcomm, thanks to its ongoing litigation. Earlier this month, Qualcomm had sued Apple for breaching its contract and allegedly sharing information with Intel for making broadband modems for its mobile devices.

A recent report by Reuters even suggested that 2018 iPhone and iPad models would debut sans Qualcomm’s modems. Moreover, Qualcomm last month filed the suits in a Beijing intellectual property court to halt the manufacturing and sales of iPhones in China.

Nevertheless, 5G is something that Apple would need to adopt in the coming future to take on the competition. Qualcomm’s CEO Steven Mollenkopf recently projected that 5G smartphones would become mainstream across key markets in 2019. The San Diego-based company unveiled the Snapdragon 636 as its first 5G-supported mobile chipset last month that is likely to power a range of affordable Android smartphones in the coming future. The chipset was based on Snapdragon X50 5G modem that was showcased last year.

Countering Qualcomm, Intel previewed its 5G modem for mobile devices at Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 earlier this year. The chip maker is also upgrading its existing 5G equipment to allow telecom companies run trials based on standards that will be released in future.

Warning: Your Child May Be Able to Unlock Your iPhone Simply by Looking at It

Your child may be able to unlock your new iPhone X simply by looking at it.

Seriously.

If you use Apple’s Face ID technology – which unlocks iPhones by recognizing the user looking at the device – you may be at risk of having your child, parent, or other close family member being able to unlock your device without your authorization. Apparently, the similarity of appearance of close relatives can, at times, trick Face ID, which sometimes has difficulty distinguishing between close family members.

While it was previously known that FaceID has problems distinguishing between twins, such a failure impacts only a small portion of the population; people who are not twins – i.e., most people – were believed not to be at risk. That perception changed, however, with the discovery by researchers that the problem is much more substantial; the fact that FaceID sometimes cannot tell the difference between less-closely-related relatives is far more problematic. Parents normally do not want their young children to be able to unlock the parents’ smartphones – and it was precisely this type of relationship that led to the discovery and reporting of the problem.

As initially reported by Andy Greeneberg in Wired:

Attaullah Malik and Sana Sherwani made that discovery earlier this month, when their fifth-grade son, Ammar Malik, walked into the bedroom of their Staten Island home to admire their new pair of iPhone Xs just after they’d set up Face ID. “There’s no way you’re getting access to this phone,” the older Malik remembers his wife telling her son, in a half-joking show of strictness. Malik offered to let Ammar look at his phone instead, but the boy picked up his mother’s, not knowing which was which. And a split second after he looked at it, the phone unlocked.

It should be noted that while humans may have difficulty distinguishing between identical twins, in almost all cases, a rational person can tell the difference between a 10-year old child and his mother. Yet, apparently, the biometric algorithms used by FaceID sometimes cannot ascertain who they see; authentication of familiar humans by visual cues is one area in which humans clearly still outpower technology.

FaceID has also fallen victim to tricks in which people create masks to match the biometrics of a device’s legitimate owner – as was reported earlier this month with researchers from Vietnam demonstrating the hack in a YouTube video.

I discussed the current vulnerability with Jeff Schwartz, Vice President of North America Engineering at Check Point Software, whom I met at the Cyberhub Summit in Atlanta earlier this month. He pointed out that “Trying to reduce the bar for security rather than strengthen authentication can produce problems until the relevant technology is perfected.” I agree. And I won’t be using facial recognition technology for unlocking my phone anytime soon.

‘Street Fighter IV CE’ is Heading to Android and Capcom is Looking for Beta Testers

I don’t own an Android device and aside from covering news that pertains to both iOS and Android I don’t really follow the scene over on Google’s platform. But I’m pretty certain that none of Capcom’s mobile iterations of Street Fighter have been on Android devices in the past, at least officially. Which makes today’s news especially exciting for Android gamers as the Capcom Mobile Twitter account has tweeted out that they’re looking for beta testers for the forthcoming Android version of Street Fighter IV Champion Edition [$4.99]. The tweet comes with a link to a survey which you can fill out to drop your name in the hat of potential beta testers.

If you’re unfamiliar with Street Fighter IV CE, it landed on iOS back in July and is essentially a revamped version of the original 2010 mobile version of Street Fighter IV and its online multiplayer capable 2011 counterpart Street Fighter IV Volt. Besides compatibility with the latest versions of iOS and the latest iOS device screen sizes, and some slightly improved visuals and additional characters, Street Fighter IV CE is largely the same as those previous games. And, well, since I LOVED those previous games I also loved Champion Edition in our review. It certainly won’t fit the bill if you’re expecting competition-level fighting, but it’s fun as heck and can fit in your pocket which makes it well worth it in my eyes.

Capcom has also added to the game since release, with 3 new fighters arriving in August and another 3 arriving just last month alongside some nice quality of life improvements to the matchmaking. Hopefully the Android version will be cross-platform so all of us mobile street fighters can play against each other, but at any rate if you’re an Android owner wanting to get your hands on Street Fighter IV CE for your device of choice, fill out the survey and hopefully make it into the beta testing pool, and we’ll let you know when the official release of the Android version is announced.

The Battle For The iPhone

Qualcomm has been supplying modems for the iPhone since 2011, and has a more mature and full-featured 5G modem. After a big RD investment, the company announced the world’s first 5G modem–the Snapdragon X50–in October 2016.

Intel–after its own gargantuan effort–won a share of the Apple modem business starting with 2016’s iPhone 7. The company has been willing to customize its products for Apple in ways Qualcomm likely would not. Apple has used the Intel modems in its iPhones for the T-Mobile and ATT GSM/LTE networks, and, because the Qualcomm modems are especially well suited to CDMA networks, has put them in iPhones for Verizon and Sprint.

That dynamic may change as the carriers transition their networks to 5G. Verizon, for one, has said it plans to no longer require that new devices connect to older CDMA networks starting in late 2018 or early 2019. When Verizon does that, our source says, Sprint, US Cellular, and a few overseas operators will still support CDMA, but the CDMA ecosystem will begin to collapse. Without a CDMA requirement, Apple has one less reason to stick with Qualcomm, which invented the widely used version of the technology.

Strained Relationship

Meanwhile, Apple’s relationship with Qualcomm has soured over the past year amid an increasingly serious legal dispute over the patent licensing fees paid to Qualcomm by Apple suppliers. Also, Qualcomm is now the subject of an acquisition attempt by rival chipmaker Broadcom, but has already rejected a $103 billon bid, which it said undervalues its business.

All of this seems to point toward the possibility of Apple looking to Intel as the sole provider of 5G modems for the iPhone. The end game, multiple sources have said, is to build the Intel modem onto an integrated system-on-a-chip (SoC) that would also contain the CPU, GPU, and other iPhone components. The SoC would be co-designed by Intel and Apple and would be fabricated at an Intel facility.

Some believe Apple’s full embrace of Intel could happen even sooner. The Wall Street Journal recently cited unnamed sources saying Apple is already building iPhone prototypes that use Intel 3G/4G modems only. The report named a smaller chipmaker, Taiwan-based MediaTek, as a possible (if somewhat unlikely) second supplier.

Looking back at the OnePlus One (and cheaper flagships generally)

Remember the OnePlus One? Chances are, anyone who owned the phone remembers it fondly for a number of reasons (if you need a refresher, check out my OnePlus One review).

In 2015, flagship smartphones started around $600, much like today. Samsung had just released the Galaxy S5, a premium device with what many considered to be a less than premium design and overall experience.

Seemingly out of nowhere, OnePlus burst onto the scene. It stirred up a lot of news after many of its members broke off from a big Chinese manufacturer, Oppo, to form the young company. That notoriety, and an aggressive guerilla marketing campaign, brought the company a ton of eyeballs when it announced a device it called the ‘flagship killer.

The OnePlus One ticked a lot of ‘flagship’ boxes. It had a Snapdragon 801 SoC, a high quality display, an above average battery, and an accessible version of Android. OnePlus managed to go above and beyond with a larger storage option and an extra gigabyte of RAM than its biggest Android competitor: the Galaxy S5. If a company that no one had ever heard of could out-spec Samsung for less money, it was worth paying attention to.

The phone had a fairly unique design too. The base model cost $299, with the 64 GB storage option priced at $349. Normally these kinds of prices meant getting something closer to a feature handset than a flagship. It meant users who were okay with sacrificing some of the more specialty features that Samsung or LG phones included could get a premium experience at almost half the price.

Don’t forget that the phone got cut down another $50 too, making it one of the most affordable flagship phones of all time.

So, why are we bringing this up? With the recent leak of a new OnePlus device, we wanted to look back at the company’s original flagship and see where it came from. Also, a couple of pieces came out on Android Authority recently which dive into a problem OnePlus tried to address back in 2015 with the One: rising smartphone prices.

The average smartphone price has gone up by 7% in the past year. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but remember the ‘average’ price is lowered by the midrange and the lower end markets. In just the flagship market, we’ve seen prices get close to (or even surpass) the $1000 mark with phones like the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy Note 8. While it can be argued from both of those companies that there are additional features which justify the prices, it’s still a lot of money.

Robert Triggs posits that these high price are one way for companies to create the premium mindset; that people perceive a really high price tag as an obvious indicator of the phone’s continued evolution. While there might be a lot of different opinions on this notion, it’s hard to argue with when phones like the Pixel 2 XL continue to sell out despite its price. Users demand the best, and some are okay with inflated prices to feel like they’ve got it, justified or not.

The OnePlus One sat in defiance of that notion— it provided a similar flagship experience to everyone at an affordable price. Though it definitely wasn’t the absolute best overall phone(for example, the camera could have used a bit of work), it was easy to excuse some of the issues because of its value for money.

Hardly any phones that came after it had the appeal of the One because even OnePlus had to start raising its prices. Perhaps to cover production costs or to just keep up with consumer perceptions of “advancement”. Now, the company that made its bones by bucking the trend of expensive phones, increasingly seems to be adopting the “if you can’t beat em, join em” mantra. OnePlus certainly never killed any flagships, and the company may become exactly what it once fought.

$1000 smartphones can be a troubling idea, one that has already become reality a few times this year. And with the rising price of even mid-range devices, it is admittedly tough to see even Android One phones fail to get below $350. Android One, remember, is a line of smartphones that is supposed to have the most minimal version of Android combined with basic hardware to deliver a reliable daily experience, albeit with managed expectations.

We’ve seen one intriguing offering from Xiaomi, and one somewhat questionably priced offering from Motorola in the Moto X4. HTC now has an Android One version of the U11 Life too. But are the days of low-priced flagship killers over?

It might not happen for even a couple of years, but eventually we will be due for another shake up. The upcoming release from OnePlus may not be it – that ship seems to have sailed already – but maybe one day the company can recapture the hype that an affordable flagship like the One received. Or maybe that task will fall to someone else.

While the OnePlus One was far from perfect it served its purpose. It let customers know there were solid alternatives to just spending more money. It reminded OEMs that there was an underserved clientele they were ignoring. The OnePlus One may even have been a catalyst for the steady improvement of cheaper phones since its debut, though we haven’t seen a device since that shares the idea of the One so purely. Consumers still want good cheap phones, it’s just a matter of who’s willing to step up to the plate and provide them.

It’s looking like China’s getting really excited about the iPhone X

Chinese consumers are getting very excited about the iPhone X. But for Apple, which has struggled to keep up with the onslaught of competition in China’s smartphone market, an upturn in fortunes may not yet be on the cards.

Already, Chinese buyers are rushing to get their pre-orders before the official product launch on Friday. JD.com, the country’s second-largest e-commerce site after Alibaba’s Tmall, received over 2.5 million pre-orders. Other sellers have tallied about another 3 million of such orders.

For perspective, Apple sold 44.9 million iPhone units in China in 2016, according to research by intelligence firm IDC.

Social media platforms in China are also seeing lively activity about Apple’s latest offering, with the term #iPhoneX being read 400 million times thus far.

Chinese consumers are picking up on the highly anticipated features not seen in previous iterations of the iPhone: Online, fans are saying that their favorite additions are the animated emojis, new camera lighting and facial recognition technology.

But it remains unclear if the hype will translate to actual sales in China.

The firm has struggled to expand its footprint in the country’s smartphone market, where intense competition saw the tech giant fall behind domestic producers Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi earlier this year, according to estimates by intelligence company Canalys.

Recent numbers look hopeful, however. Apple saw a 40 percent year-over-year increase in its third-quarter iPhone sales in China, although analysts questioned whether the rise would be sustainable.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said last year that the Asian country, the world’s largest smartphone market, would be integral to the tech giant’s growth.
