Flipkart rolls out an update for its Windows 10 app

by Anmol

Flipkart has replaced its Windows 10 app with a web wrapper

70c5d_Flipkart-min Flipkart has replaced its Windows 10 app with a web wrapper

Flipkart, the electronic commerce company headquartered in Bengaluru, India has today replaced its Windows 10 app with a web wrapper. Today, the company updated its application to version 4.0.3.0 and the app now opens the web version of Flipkart on both desktop and Mobile.

Flipkart was one of the best-designed Windows 10 apps, the app based on the Microsoft’s Universal Windows Platform offered a seamless experience across all form factors devices. However, the new client is just a basic web app which is available for Windows 10 PCs and Mobiles.

It appears that the new Flipkart ‘app’ has been developed with Project Westminster, the official bridge that allows developers to port their apps to the Microsoft Store (formerly Windows Store).

“At Flipkart, we strive to innovate and re-invent the customer experience at every touch-point. Over the last few months, we have been working on the Windows 10 platform to create richer and more personalized experience for our consumers. We have been working towards creating a seamless experience similar to that of an app and Windows 10 surely provides opportunities to introduce innovative features,” Amar Nagaram, Director, Mobile Engineering, Flipkart said in a blog post last year.

The Flipkart web app performance is apparently better than the actual Windows 10 app, while you can get the same Flipkart Lite app experience by visiting the company’s website. It’s worth noting again that Flipkart’s app is just a web wrapper that doesn’t do more what the web version of the electronic commerce company can do.

Indiatech.org: From Flipkart’s Sachin Bansal to Ola, India’s … – Quartz

Some of India’s biggest entrepreneurs are serious about getting the country to shut out foreign rivals.

Nearly a year after he first mentioned the need for protectionist policies like those in China, Sachin Bansal, one of India’s most successful young entrepreneurs, has brought together like-minded people to form a lobby group called Indiatech.org.

The Flipkart founder, along with a host of other startups and investors, is launching the body representing the interests of local ventures. The group will rally against deep-pocketed foreign rivals as India’s e-commerce industry heads towards explosive growth. While many key players are siding with Bansal, many others are also making a case for global competition.

Bansal has not yet outlined how Indiatech.org will work, but source-based media reports suggest that he has roped in Gyanendra Badgaiyan, a former Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and economist, to head the group.

Others who have joined the lobby are ride-hailing unicorn Ola, travel portal MakeMyTrip, online classifieds platform Quikr and messenger app Hike, VCCircle reported. Flipkart and MakeMyTrip declined to offer comments for this story; others didn’t respond to emails from Quartz.

Indiatech.org has also found supporters in Indian venture capital (VC) firm Kalaari Capital, led by Vani Kola, and foreign players such as Japan’s Softbank and US-based Matrix Partners. In response to an emailed questionnaire, a Softbank spokesperson told Quartz:

SoftBank is one of the several other investors including Matrix and Kalaari and Indian internet businesses such as Ola, Flipkart and Hike, who are supporting Indiatech. Our intent is to work with the government to support the development of the rapidly evolving internet ecosystem in the country and we hope the organisation would facilitate this.

Softbank is an investor in Flipkart, which competes with American e-tail giant Amazon. Matrix Partner backs Ola, which closely competes with San Francisco-based Uber.

Saving themselves

Indian tech startups are battling deep-pocketed global players that have entered the fray with years of international experience.

For instance, even though it entered India five years after Flipkart was founded in 2007, Amazon has by now reached nearly the same scale as the former. And while, in 2016, the Bengaluru-based firm struggled to raise funds, Amazon had no such constraints.

It is this dearth of capital that led Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal to gun for protectionism last year. “It is not just about innovation and consumers. Indian markets are behind because there is no local capital available, so Indian companies have to look abroad for capital… Whoever has higher access to capital often ends up succeeding,” he said in December 2016. “Global companies can raise capital much easier than local Indian companies can, because they have access to many more markets than we do, and this ends up distorting competition.”

Bansal also said that foreign companies succeed through “capital dumping, predatory pricing or anti-WTO” practices, drawing from their other profitable markets. Therefore, Bansal argued, India needs to follow in China’s footsteps and “tell the world we need your capital, but we don’t need your companies.”

Tricky spot

Yet, it is important to note that ventures owned by Bansal and Aggarwal themselves may not be truly “Indian.”

Flipkart, for one, is registered in Singapore, and Ola is backed by foreign investors like Softbank and China-based Tencent, which hold a significant stake in the company. These firms, however, insist they are Indian as their founders and management are based in the country.

That said, Amazon India is headed by a local, Amit Agarwal, and the company has a strong employee base in the country. Uber has also strengthened its local leadership in India in recent years. “Other startups are as foreign in their investment profile as any other company. So I really don’t understand this,” Amazon’s Agarwal told business channel ET Now on Oct. 27.

Vijay Shekhar Sharma, founder of payments startup Paytm, also questioned this nationalist logic. “The same firm which is worried about ‘international companies’ is actually international, internationally funded, and internationally-owned by shareholders,” he said at the India Economic Summit 2017 in early October.

Meanwhile, the Indian IT industry body, NASSCOM, told Quartz that it welcomes an e-commerce lobby to ensure a “level-playing-field, access to capital, infrastructure, technology, mentorship.” However, it remains a steadfast supporter of global competition.

“We do not believe in trade barriers like China has set up. Competition has to happen,” said Prasanto K Roy, the head of NASSCOM’s internet, mobile and e-commerce council, recognising that over two-thirds of the business in India’s $150 billion IT industry comes from global clients. “This is the 21st century.”

Flipkart’s sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc

2d8dc_1x1.trans Flipkart's sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc2d8dc_1x1.trans Flipkart's sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc Flipkart’ Festive Dhamaka Days: Exchange offers on Apple iPhone SE, Xiaomi Mi A1, Mi Max 2 and how they work.

Flipkart’s ‘Festive Dhamaka Days’ sale is on for the next 11 hours or so, and mobiles like Xiaomi Mi A1, Xiaomi Mi Max, Redmi Note 4, Apple’s iPhone SE, iPhone 7, etc all have exchange discounts on them as well. The Flipkart product page for many of these mobiles will say: Upto Rs 14,000 off on exchange.

Now for consumers this might seem like a really good deal, especially if one considers the price of Mi A1, which is Rs 14,999. If you actually get Rs 14,000 off, then the price is effectively Rs 999 in case of the Mi A1 and the Mi Max 2, which has a similar deal. But the exchange discount does have a catch, and we explain why these high discounts are not really possible to score .

First, what is exchange discount on mobiles, smartphones ?

Essentially Flipkart, and even Amazon, will offer further discount on the final price of a smartphone if you are trading in an older mobile phone for this. So if Flipkart has listed Xiaomi Mi A1’s price as Rs 14,999 and promises Rs 14,000 off on exchange, this means the maximum discount you can get for your older smartphone. Effectively if you did get Rs 14,000 off, the phone would cost Rs 999. But there’s a slim chance of that actually happening.

What’s the catch with these exchange offers?

Chances are your older mobile phone, unless it is an Apple iPhone devices (6s and above) or the Samsung Galaxy S8, it won’t fetch such a high price on the Flipkart exchange value. Users should note that under the ‘Buy with Exchange’ value, the company has already determined the price for various models of mobiles across each brand. Also Apple users are at a considerable advantage here as even the older iPhones have a higher exchange value compared to many other mobiles.

How do I check the value of my old mobile phone on Flipkart for exchange?

As we’ve pointed out, the value of each mobile is pre-determined by Flipkart. In order to check the value of your old phone, click on the ‘Buy with Exchange’ option on the product page. A separate pop-up opens on the page itself. Choose the model number, the brand name from the list and see the value that is listed for the product. If you wish to trade the older mobile for the new phone and think the price quote is worth it, enter the IMEI number and hit ‘Buy with Exchange.’ If your mobile is not listed, then the exchange scheme doesn’t apply.

2d8dc_1x1.trans Flipkart's sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc2d8dc_1x1.trans Flipkart's sale: How mobile exchange discount works on Mi A1, iPhone SE, etc Apple iPhone models will likely fetch a higher price compared to most other brands.

What are terms and conditions of the ‘Buy with Exchange’ scheme for Flipkart?

Flipkart has a list of terms and conditions for the mobile phone. A user has to agree to these before accepting the exchange offer. Also it is best not to lie about the condition of the device because if they don’t match, then the company might not accept the mobile phone at the time of pickup.

Flipkart’s terms and conditions say that “brand and model of the old device” has to match what you’ve claimed. So if you are claiming to trade in an iPhone 6s, then it has to be an iPhone 6s at the time of pickup, not any other phone. The phone should switch on for a minimum of 30 seconds without connecting to charger, adds the company.

Also the IMEI number of the old mobile has to be the same as the one provided when hitting buy. Most importantly the screen should have not cracks. The body of the phone should not be sporting major dents or have buttons missing either. The mobile phone has to be unlocked, all data removed, etc. For Apple iPhones, the iCloud had to be deactivated, and the device has to be in a working condition.

So how much off can I get under exchange for my old mobile phone, if I don’t have an iPhone?

Xiaomi Redmi Note 3, Redmi Note 4 users can expect between Rs 3150 to 3500 off on the final price. Older models from Xiaomi might only fetch Rs 1200 on exchange. The rates are similar across the brands as well. In fact, the only smartphone we saw fetching Rs 14,000 off was the Samsung Galaxy S8. Unless you are exchanging it already for Apple iPhone 8 Plus, trading this in for a mid-range phone doesn’t make sense.

Apple iPhone SE also comes with up to Rs 15,300 off under exchange on the website. Again the maximum discount is determined by the model of the phone, and unless there’s another iPhone on the list, don’t expect a very high price cut.

iPhone 8 Pre-Bookings, Flipkart v Amazon v Paytm Sales, Google Tez, and More News This Week

This week in news, Apple’s new iPhones still topped the list. You can now book an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus, as pre-bookings have opened in India. The pre-orders are going to continue util September 29, at which point it goes on sale. The iPhone X launch will happen later, in November, but if you’re not impressed by the edge-to-edge design of the X (along with the new price tag that can go beyond Rs. 1 lakh) and want a new iPhone now, then these two devices are what you’re after anyway.

As is to be expected, there are a number of launch offers in place that you can take advantage of if you are buying the iPhone 8 or the iPhone 8 Plus. There are discounts, buyback offers, and exchange offers, both online and offline. Online, Amazon has an exchange if up to Rs. 20,341, with an additional Rs. 10,000 for older iPhone models. Flipkart has a similar offer, with discounts up to Rs. 23,000, and an extra Rs. 3,000 for old iPhones. It’s also offering 10 percent off on SBI cards, 5 percent for Axis Bank Buzz credit cards, 10 percent on PhonePe, and Rs. 10,000 on Citibank cards if you buy an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. You can also get the buyback guarantee for Rs. 99, which will get you at least Rs. 40,000 if you exchange the phone next year.

Not to be left behind, Reliance Jio is also offering deals for the two new iPhone models. The telco has a buyback offer that you can get both online and offline, if you’re pre-booking the iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus. It’s promising 70 percent as buyback value (excluding taxes) if you return the phone in a year, after using it on Jio. So if you get the 256GB iPhone 8 for Rs. 77,000 then the buyback value is Rs. 47,432, in vouchers that can be used within six months in Reliance Digital stores.

Despite the deals, the response to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus launch worldwide has been tepid at best. The iPhone 8 launch was greeted by thinner than usual crowds around the world, with fans perhaps holding off for the iPhone X for now. At the same time, we got confirmation that the iPhone 8, and iPhone X, really do live up to their reputation as high-end devices.

The iPhone X and iPhone 8 sport a new chip, the A11 Bionic, and on popular testing software GeekBench 4, the new chip’s scores are off the charts. In both multi-core and single-core tests, the phone performed significantly better than the competition. The two new iPhone models also topped the camera rankings on DxOMark. The iPhone 8 also performed impressively in durability and bend tests, but despite all this, it seems to be overshadowed by the iPhone X for now, though no one has got their hands on a X till now.

The other big event this week was the pileup of e-commerce sales, from Flipkart, Amazon, and Paytm as well as some others. Amazon’s sale started from Wednesday, though Prime members got started 12 hours early at noon on Tuesday. Flipkart’s sale started on Tuesday, as did Paytm’s Mera Cashback sale. While Paytm’s sale ended on Saturday, the other who are ending on Sunday, so there are still some good offers available right now.

At the time of writing, we found some deals that are still on, which sound pretty good. For example, you can get an iPhone 7 32GB at Rs. 38,999 via Amazon – that’s still pretty great because even after the iPhone 8 launch, the iPhone 7 is priced at Rs. 49,000. There was an even bigger deal on the Samsung Galaxy S7, but that’s sold out, but you can probably still get the incredible deal on Apple AirPods and the popular Redmi Note 4. You can also get a MacBook Air for Rs. 52,990 on Amazon; the same deal was on the other sites too by appears to have expired. You can also get a Google Pixel 32GB for Rs. 41,999, with additional exchange offers, or the JBL Cinema SB150 soundbar on Flipkart at Rs. 10,999.

These weren’t the only offers either – Reliance Jio slashed prices for the JioFi 4G Wi-Fi hotspot by 50 percent. The hotspot is available at this discounted rate until the end of the month. Normally priced at Rs. 1,999, you can buy one now for Rs. 999. Samsung also announced a price cut on its flagship the Samsung Galaxy S8, and the Galaxy S8+. The Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ prices have been cut by Rs. 4,000 – which should bring them down to Rs. 53,990 and Rs. 60,990 respectively. The company adds that HDFC Bank customers get a cashback of Rs. 4,000 in addition, though it insists these price cuts are temporary.

The sale was a big event for a lot of companies, and Flipkart and Xiaomi both say they broke records during the sales. According to Flipkart, it sold a record-breaking 1.3 million smartphones in the first 20 hours of the sale, with offers in handsets ranging from the iPhone 7, the Samsung Galaxy S7, and the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, to name a few. But Xiaomi added to this saying that it sold more than 1 million smartphones during the first two days of the big sales. That worked out to 300 smartphones being sold by the company every single minute, which it revealed is a significant improvement over the numbers it was seeing during last year’s festive sale. At that time, it took 18 days to hit the same benchmark.

The week kicked off though with the launch of Google’s UPI app, Tez. Launched by Google as a standalone app, Tez is a UPI app that can be linked to your bank account, and used for payments both online and offline. Right after its launch, Flipkart announced that its PhonePe app is in the lead among UPI apps, and says that it has 45 percent of the market. According to PhonePe, it saw 11.6 million transactions in July, at 39 percent of the market. Google meanwhile says that in the first 24 hours, it saw over 4 lakh active users on the app.

The India launch for the phone is set for next week, on September 26, though the variant launching here is expected to be the regular one with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage.

Huawei will be launching its Mate 10 smartphone on October 16 but renders of the phones have already been leaked, ahead of the official launch. Speaking of render leaks, we also got a look at the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, which are tipped to be manufactured by HTC and LG respectively. The pricing of the Pixel 2 has been said to start from $649 (approximately Rs. 42,100), and the Pixel 2 XL from $849 (roughly Rs. 54,600).
