A team of engineers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) has unveiled the design of a working chip that can integrate quantum interactions.
According to UNSW, the design, which can be manufactured using mostly standard industry processes and components, comprises a “novel architecture” that allows quantum calculations to be performed using existing semiconductor components, known as CMOS — complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor. CMOS is the basis for all modern chips.
“We often think of landing on the Moon as humanity’s greatest technological marvel, but creating a microprocessor chip with a billion operating devices integrated together to work like a symphony — that you can carry in your pocket — is an astounding technical achievement, and one that’s revolutionised modern life,” Andrew Dzurak, director of the Australian National Fabrication Facility at UNSW, said.
“With quantum computing, we are on the verge of another technological leap that could be as deep and transformative. But a complete engineering design to realise this on a single chip has been elusive. I think what we have developed at UNSW now makes that possible. And most importantly, it can be made in a modern semiconductor manufacturing plant.”
The chip design, published in the journal Nature Communications, was devised by Dzurak alongside Dr Menno Veldhorst, who is the lead author of the paper and was a research fellow at UNSW when the conceptual work was performed.
“Remarkable as they are, today’s computer chips cannot harness the quantum effects needed to solve the really important problems that quantum computers will,” Veldhorst added.
Instead, a large number of working quantum bits (qubits) will need to work in tandem to achieve the processing power quantum computers are slated to deliver.
“Our design incorporates conventional silicon transistor switches to ‘turn on’ operations between qubits in a vast two-dimensional array, using a grid-based ‘word’ and ‘bit’ select protocol similar to that used to select bits in a conventional computer memory chip,” he added.
“By selecting electrodes above a qubit, we can control a qubit’s spin, which stores the quantum binary code of a 0 or 1. And by selecting electrodes between the qubits, two-qubit logic interactions, or calculations, can be performed between qubits.”
As a useful universal quantum computer will require a large number of qubits, the engineers at the university need to use error-correcting codes that employ multiple qubits to store a single piece of data.
“Our chip blueprint incorporates a new type of error-correcting code designed specifically for spin qubits, and involves a sophisticated protocol of operations across the millions of qubits. It’s the first attempt to integrate into a single chip all of the conventional silicon circuitry needed to control and read the millions of qubits needed for quantum computing,” Dzurak explained.
Dzurak, who is also a program leader at Australia’s Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computation and Communication Technology (CQC2T), expects there will still be modifications required before the chip moves towards manufacture, but said all of the key components that are needed for quantum computing are in the one chip.
“That’s what will be needed if we are to make quantum computers a workhorse for calculations that are well beyond today’s computers,” Dzurak added. “It shows how to integrate the millions of qubits needed to realise the true promise of quantum computing.”
Dzurak was instrumental in building a quantum logic gate in silicon, which made calculations between two qubits of information possible.
At the time, the discovery was called a landmark result not only for Australia, but also for the world, as until then it had not been possible to make two quantum bits “talk” to each other and create a logic gate using silicon.
“This result means that all of the fundamental building blocks that are required to make a full-scale silicon processor chip are now in place,” Dzurak said previously. “We’re ready to move from this scientific research phase, into the engineering stage and the manufacturing stage.”
Building on this breakthrough, another team of researchers out of the university, led by professor Michelle Simmons, unlocked the key to enabling quantum computer coding in silicon, announcing in late 2015 that the team had the capability to write and manipulate a quantum version of computer code using two qubits in a silicon microchip.
Quantum computing is expected to revolutionise the world, with Australia well placed to be the first across the quantum finish line.

The CBC is typically part of your regular checkup. “I also order a complete blood count for patients who are weak or tired; have swelling, bruising or bleeding; or who may have an infection,” Dr. Allan. explains. “This test also can help me check how a patient’s body is responding to medication.”
What if your test results are abnormal? Don’t worry. They don’t necessarily mean you’re sick.
Diet, menstrual cycle, medication and other factors can affect your scores. Talk to your doctor about your CBC results. He or she will explain any areas of concern and help you determine next steps.
The iPhone X is an incredible piece of technology. But if you want the “complete” iPhone X experience, you’re going to need to open your wallet again for a few must-have accessories.
Take a look:
A good case
I’m not a big fan of cases, but owning a case is an absolute necessity if you own the iPhone X, which has both a glass front and a glass back.
There’s one good reason you’ll want a case: Repairing the iPhone X can be extremely expensive.
If you break the iPhone X’s front screen, you’ll pay:
• $29 if you bought AppleCare+
• $279 if you’re not under warranty
If you break the iPhone X’s back glass, it’s even more costly:
• $99 if you bought AppleCare+
• $549 if you’re not under warranty
That’s not a typo – you will literally pay roughly half the price of your iPhone X if you don’t have AppleCare+ and you need to get the phone’s glass back repaired.
So please, for your own sake, get a case. My colleague Avery Hartmans rounded up the best iPhone X cases you can buy, but I would personally recommend you get a case from Apple (they make some very nice silicone and leather cases) or Society6, which has hundreds of thousands of different fun designs to choose from.
A wireless charger
The iPhone 8 and X models are the first iPhones to support fast charging and wireless charging, but given how fantastic the battery life is on these new iPhones, I wouldn’t recommend a fast charger; they’re expensive solutions for a problem you won’t really have with the iPhone X. On average, I end each day with about 60% left on my iPhone’s battery, so I personally don’t have occasions where I need to quickly charge my phone.
Wireless chargers, though, are totally worth your money: Since your phone will almost certainly make it through a full day, you just place your iPhone X on a charging pad when you’re ready to go to sleep, and by the time you wake up, it’ll be fully charged. Or, you can put the phone down for a few minutes and pick it back up whenever you need. It’s a much more fluid and elegant solution compared to continually unplugging and replugging your phone into a Lightning connector.
As for a specific charger, I would highly recommend buying Belkin’s BoostUp wireless charging pad for iPhone X and iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. Belkin was kind enough to let me borrow a review unit and I’m thrilled with the product: It’s simple, looks beautiful, and works effortlessly. You just plug a into a socket, connect the cord to the charging pad that rests on your table or nightstand, and you’re all set! Just place your iPhone on the pad (in any orientation, just in the middle), and it’ll start charging. It works instantly, feels very futuristic to use, and makes the iPhone X feel like a more complete experience.
My colleague Steven Tweedie is a big fan of Samsung’s wireless charging pad, which can also prop up your iPhone X at an angle on your nightstand.
AirPods (or any wireless headphones)
The iPhone X comes with a dongle in case you want to plug in your favorite pair of wired headphones, but honestly, it’s almost 2018, and you should really own yourself a nice set of wireless headphones at this point. You can get wireless headphones for pretty cheap these days, and they offer a ton of great benefits – like not feeling tethered to a tiny device in your pocket. It’s a freedom you need to try for yourself.
Of course, it’s no surprise Apple products work best with other Apple products, so for wireless headphones I would recommend Apple’s $170 AirPods, which are easily my favorite pair of wireless headphones and are worth that price; you could also consider Beats’ way more expensive Solo3 ($330) or Studio3 ($400) headphones. All of those headphones sound excellent, and they come with Apple’s proprietary W1 chip that enables near-instant pairing between your iPhone X and your headphones. When you turn on your headphones, they’ll automatically connect to your device.
There are a ton of great wireless headphones out there – I’m partial to V-Moda’s Crossfade Wireless as an over-ear option, personally, but many people also swear by Sennheiser’s HD-1 headphones – but I love AirPods and would recommend them to just about anyone. Forget how they look to other people; they’re lightweight, sound excellent, and I find them very comfortable. For both listening to music and answering phone calls, to me, they’re the ideal complement for the iPhone X.

All existing computers in the College’s Learning Center have been upgraded with new All-in-One systems protected with Smart-Shield software. The Learning Center, at the Newark campus, contains 23 desktop computers.
“The upgrade is part of the College’s continuous effort to improve the delivery of student services,” said Dr. June Persaud, Associate Dean of Program Development Learning Resources. She added the Learning Center is an instructional lab, not an open lab. The units will be utilized by students under the direct supervision of the Learning Associates for tutoring.
The College’s Information Technologies Department, under the leadership of Executive Dean/Chief Information Officer Mohamed Seddiki, completed the upgrades.
As our phones have turned themselves into “smartphones,” they’ve lost their status as a basic communication device. Instead, they are powerful, portable mini-computers that are continuously playing a big part in our technologically advanced lives. This also makes us rely on them for all of our valuable data and needs.
In such a situation, it makes perfect sense to make sure that our smartphone communicates perfectly with our computers and we can sync our data seamlessly. If you aren’t in a walled garden, for example, Apple’s, this could turn out to be a big issue. To solve this problem and make Android data management more comfortable, here, I’m going to tell you about Coolmuster Android Assistant.
It’s a complete Android smartphone management application that does all tasks you can imagine. Its primary functions are creating backups of your phone’s data like Apps, Contacts, SMS, Music, Photos, Videos, etc.
How to use Coolmuster Android Assistant as a complete phone management tool?
You can download this app from Coolmuster’s website and install it on your PC; it’s available for all Windows platforms, including Windows 10, 8, 7, etc. You can install it on macOS as well.
The first look of the application and its mint color theme is pleasant to eyes. The interface is clutter free, and all options are clearly visible in front of our eyes. All the data options are listed on the left pane, and the main working window is on the right. You’ll also see options to connect your Android device to your PC via USB cable or WiFi.
To connect it using USB cable, you need to enable Developer Options in Android and enable USB debugging. As the connection starts getting established, a supporting Android app also gets installed. You can also install this app separately and use it to connect your device via WiFi. I liked the option to connect the device via WiFi as it removes the need for a cable.
Once the connection is established, you’ll see all apps, contacts, music, video, photos, etc., getting populated under specific categories. Clicking on them will reveal your data. From the options given at the top, you can add new data to your Android smartphone, delete the files, export them to your PC, etc. You can either select it one by one or choose all files at once.
In case you’re addicted to texting on your phone, with Coolmuster, you can get it done from the comfort of your PC’s keyboard. With this software, you can send messages to someone or a group of people. You can also add new contacts, edit them, and delete duplicate contacts with ease.
For the Android enthusiasts who are habitual of installing and trying out dozens of applications on their smartphone, this tool is beneficial. It’s a complete app management tool that lets you add new applications, install them, and delete them with ease. The tools Windows-like app management windows will appeal to many.
The app window lists all the third-party applications at one place and shows you their installation date, version, and size. You can export the apps as well in the form of an APK file and install it on another Android device. If you have got a long list of installed apps, there’s a search box as well to help you get your work done at the earliest.
There’s a Super Toolkit as well
In case you’re not interested in dealing with the individual files and options shown on the home screen of the app, there’s an option for you as well. Under the tab called Super Toolkit, there’s Backup and Restore option for taking care of your data in one go.
With the help of Coolmuster Android Assistant, you can quickly create a backup file of data and store it locally. To do so, just click on the Backup option and choose what kind of files you’d like to backup. You are shown the total size of the backed up data and asked to specify a backup location as well. After doing that, click on the button at the bottom to complete the process.
To restore your files, you need to click on Restore option in Super Toolkit, and it will automatically locate the stored back up on your PC. Now choose the data that you wish to restore and proceed.

The next update to Microsoft’s flagship Windows 10 computer software has been made available to consumers for the first time.
The Fall Creators Update is the fourth major upgrade offered to the operating system, which first launched in 2015.
The update includes Paint 3D, a new multidimensional version of the sketching app, which will no longer come pre-installed with the software for the first time in 32 years.
This means you’ll have to go to the Windows Store to download it.
The Fall Creators Update also includes a new copy and paste tool which will enable users to highlight text on one device before pasting the content on another.
Story Remix, a new image and video editing app that enables users to quickly create short video montages using shared photos and video, is also part of the upgrade, which Microsoft’s
Terry Myserson said had been designed “to help you unlock creativity”.
“Unleashing that creativity with new experiences, that is what propels us into the future,” he said.
“And for us, those experiences begin with Windows 10, the most popular version of Windows on the planet, with more than 500 million devices in homes, businesses, and schools helping you create and play.”
The update will be available to download for free by all those already running Windows 10.
Users will be sent notifications once the software is ready to download onto their machine.
Then you should be able to install it in just a few clicks.
Microsoft will be hoping to avoid the controversies that have dogged updates of the past, where some customers have accused the company of “forcing” them to update to new versions of Windows.
Many people claimed their computers crashed as a result of installing the update.
The tech giant apologised in the wake of the Windows 10 rollout and has since altered the way it handles updates, but industry experts still encourage users to back-up their computer before carrying out any update.
According to figures from September, Windows 10 is the second most popular desktop software among PC users, accounting for around 28 per cent of total users, according to NetMarketShare.
The company’s older Windows 7 software remains the industry’s most popular operating system.
If you’re like me, you probably have an app idea or two knocking around in your head, quietly going stale. You know users would love it, you know your idea is better than the other stuff you see out there, but there’s only one problem:
You can’t code.
Sure, there’s plenty of excuses you can make. It’s hard to know where to start, and you know other developers go to school for years to get their L33T c0d1ng skillz, and you don’t have the time or money for that.
Online courses are an option, but those can be pretty pricey too. I mean, just look at this bundle. Every one of the learning kits clocks in at around $200.
Luckily for you, this selection of courses is brand new and fully up to date with Android Oreo. Online courses live and die by their rating and number of enrolled students, so when new courses launch, they’ll often bundle them with related courses and sell them at a substantially reduced price.
Here’s what you get:
- The Complete Android Oreo Kotlin Developer Course $200 Value
- The Complete Android Oreo App Development Course $200 Value
- The Android Oreo Java Developer Mastery Course $200 Value
- The Complete Kotlin Developer Masterclass: Build Kotlin Apps $195 Value
You don’t have to be a math wizard to see that if you were to buy these courses individually, you’d be forking over nearly $800. However, if you act in the promotional window, you can snag all four for $34.
Ready to stop stalling and start coding? Click the button below for a full breakdown of all the course offerings!
