Brainstorm Health: Alzheimer’s Cases to Skyrocket, Medical ‘Virtualists’, Sage Depression Drug

Hello, readers! This is Sy.

A National Institutes of Health-funded (NIH) study presents a sobering projection: The number of Americans with Alzheimer’s or cognitive impairment will hit 15 million by 2060, fueled by an aging population. And, by using a new kind of methodology which incorporates people at risk of developing Alzheimer’s, the researchers determined that about 6 million U.S. adults have Alzheimer’s or mild cognitive impairment.

The new method of calculation may be more precise than current tactics and could present an opportunity to assess Alzheimer’s-prevention techniques. “For the first time, scientists have attempted to account for numbers of people with biomarkers or other evidence of possible preclinical Alzheimer’s disease, but who do not have impairment or Alzheimer’s dementia. People with such signs of preclinical disease are at increased risk to develop Alzheimer’s dementia,” wrote the NIH in a press release. “The researchers say they factored those rates of transition in their multi-state model; further, the model can estimate the impact of some possible prevention efforts on the number of future cases.”

Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). In America and abroad, the condition (and other dementia and cognitive decline conditions) are expected to balloon in the coming decades—an ironic side effect of growing life expectancy across the globe. The trouble is that there aren’t really any drugs that tackle the root of Alzheimer’s rather than just its symptoms. Companies attempting to innovate in the space, like Eli Lilly and Merck, have been hit with costly failures (although Biogen is still marching forth in its efforts). And some scientists even disagree with each other about what, exactly, it is that should be targeted in the hunt for a cure.

The dearth of treatment options ups the ante for finding effective prevention techniques, whether they be diet, exercise, “brain games,” or other activities; but the first step in assessing those options is getting the numbers right—which is the broader goal of this new methodology.

The XLuMee iPhone cases are thin enough to work with wireless charging

For iPhone X owners who want to step up their selfie game, LuMee’s latest release might be your solution. The company behind a line of illuminated smartphone cases has officially debuted two new cases made specifically for Apple’s flagship device.

This time around, the LuMee Duo X and LuMee Selfie cases for the iPhone X both have a 15-percent thinner design — specifically for wireless charging. With most wireless charging pads, your case can’t be thicker than 3 millimeters. A new button placement on the back of the case allows for the wireless charging to pass through, which means you’ll no longer have to take the case off.

For some, not having to struggle to take the LuMee case off your phone every time you want to wirelessly charge it may come as a relief. The common issue has even been addressed via a how-to video released by the company, demonstrating two different ways to properly take it off. Thankfully, the new iPhone X cases also come with softer rails for easier removal.

As with the original LuMee Duo, the iPhone X version comes with front and back-facing LED lights on both sides of the case. With four LEDs on the back, your photos taken using the rear-facing camera will always be well-lit. If you don’t need as much light, the LuMee Selfie for iPhone X has two rows of LED lighting on the front case.

The LuMee Duo case is available for pre-order on the company’s site in four different color variants — Rose Matte, Black Matte, Pearl White, and White Marble, for $70. It will ship the last week of December and arrive by January 1. The LuMee Selfie case will be available for pre-order later this month in Black Marble and Pink Quartz for $50.

Along with the new iPhone X cases, LuMee is also releasing the LuMee Power Light — a power charger with an LED lighting panel and USB-C charging port. The Power Light is especially useful for those who need additional light, since it features strobe light effects and dimming capabilities. But it won’t be available for purchase until December 15, for $50 in both Rose and Black.

New HIV Cases In New York City Hit Record Low, Health Department Says

The department’s HIV Surveillance Annual Report report says 2,279 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in 2016, fewer than the year earlier and a big drop from the 5,906 new cases the department logged in 2001, its first year of tracking.

Health Department reveals city HIV cases hit record low

New diagnoses of HIV in New York City have reached an all-time low, the Health Department will announce Wednesday.

In 2016, 2,279 people were newly diagnosed with the virus — down 8.6% from 2015, according to data from the city’s HIV Surveillance Annual Report.

“I would even go so far to say that it’s good and big news,” Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, the Health Department’s Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control, told the Daily News. “I’m pretty euphoric about the news, to be honest.”

That’s down from 5,906 new infections in 2001, when the city first started tracking new HIV diagnoses.

NYC hospital sued for faxing man’s HIV diagnosis to his workplace

The drop was even starker among men who have sex with men: Among that population, diagnoses fell from 1,450 in 2015 to 1,236 in in 2016 — a 14.8% drop.

New diagnoses among that group had been stalled in recent years, Daskalakis said — and the city believes this year’s sudden drop is thanks to increased use of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. Those are preventative drugs that can be taken by people who don’t have HIV, but are at risk of it — and are increasingly being prescribed to men who have sex with men.

“I’m excited because if this is what happened in 2016, I can only imagine what’s going to happen in 2017 in terms of accelerating the decline of new infections,” he said. “We’ve launched so many new interventions that focus on getting people on new medicines.”

The Health Department’s Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control Dr. Demetre Daskalakis said, “I would even go so far to say that it’s good and big news.”

The city estimates that 5% of men who have sex with men were on PrEP at the start of 2016 — but that grew to 30% by the end of the year.

Aetna accidently reveals HIV status of thousands of customers

It was an area “where we’d seen no movement,” Charles King, the director of AIDS-service organization Housing Works, said. “And suddenly we’re seeing sudden movement.”

He, too, believed PrEP to be behind much of the decrease — in part because there had not been a similar decrease in diagnoses among groups that are less likely to be prescribed PrEP. In fact, infections among women rose in 2016.

“That’s the part that to me is the most concerning,” Daskalakis said. In the past, “I would look at the (men who have sex with men) diagnoses and say, ‘oh we’ve plateaued. And now I look at the women diagnoses as we’ve gone down (elsewhere) and say, ‘oh we’ve plateaued.’”

After having success with men, the city will look to make more women who might be at risk of contracting HIV — and their doctors — aware of PrEP in the next year.

Tom Price’s wife walks back suggestion to quarantine HIV patients

“When the providers of care for women really buy into pre-exposure prophylactics and understand its role, all of a sudden they’re prescribing to their patients,” Daskalakis said.

Daskalakis said the sudden drop was thanks to an increased use of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP.

(mrfiza/Getty Images/iStockphoto)

The city has also looked to overcome racial disparities in diagnoses. Men of color still make up the majority of new diagnoses, though new infections declined among black, Latino and white men in 2016. The city worked to reach black and Hispanic men with information about PrEP in 2016, Daskalakis said.

That included rebranding STD clinics to sexual health clinics and establishing a more advanced system for delivering PrEP to people who need it. Among those receiving PrEP from the city’s clinics, about 60% are black and Latino — a much higher share of the population on PrEP than nationally.

Among those who do have HIV, 76% have achieved “viral suppression.” People with HIV who take antiretroviral medicines to maintain an undetectable viral load for at least six month have effectively no risk of sexually transmitting HIV, according to the Health Department.

California lowers penalty for knowingly exposing someone to HIV

King said he wanted to see that figure increase in the city — in part by getting people other than doctors involved in ensuring people stay on their medicine.

“We need for non-clinical providers, whether it’s housing, case management, anybody who is touching the lives of people who are HIV-positive, to own, track, report on viral suppression for the people they serve,” he said.

There are seven new Pad Quill cases available for the Apple iPhone X. Full-grain leather, wood, and black polycarbonate are used to create a collection of five folio wallet and two wood backed protective cases.

Check out Jason Cipriani’s full ZDNet review of the Apple iPhone X with a deserving 9.5/10 rating.

Apple iPhone X: This is as good as it gets

Face ID, an impressive display, new interaction methods, and solid performance put the iPhone X on top.

To get a feel for these seven new iPhone X cases, Pad and Quill sent along the Timberline and Bella Fino cases for evaluation. These cases are priced at $39.95 and $89.95, but there is a site-wide 15 percent off sale this weekend as we kick off the holiday shopping season. The discounted prices are $33.96 and $76.46.

Both cases are extremely well made and you can tell a lot was put into creating each one. The leather smells fantastic and has an attractive fit and finish. The wood grain also looks amazing on the Timberline case.

Timberline case

There are two wood back options for the Pad and Quill Timberline case, American Walnut and Rosewood. I checked out the American Walnut case and love how it provides a unique look and feel while not adding much in size to the iPhone X.

There is a soft touch matte finish polycarbonate shell that securely holds your iPhone X in the case. The sides of the shell are covered more than halfway up from the bottom while there are large openings for all buttons, speaker, and ports.

A piece of smooth hardwood is attached on the back of each shell and each case is unique due to the use of actual wood in the case design. The inside of the case has the initials of the artisan that made your individual case too. There is an opening in the wood for your dual camera and flash so that no images are impacted by the opening.

Wireless charging and Apple Pay both work fine when your iPhone X is in the case. The sides also rise just above the display so your screen is protected when you place it down on a table.

Bella Fino Wallet case

There are three exterior leather color options on the Bella Fino Wallet case, including Chocolate, Whiskey, and Galloper Black. Three possible interior colors include Deep Sea Blue, Forest Green, and Slate Gray. A Whiskey with Forest Green case was sent along for me to try.

The wallet folio case has a 3M panel on the right side where you can securely position your iPhone X. In addition, Pad Quill includes a matte finish polycarbonate shell, similar to the front shell part of the Timberline case. The back of this shell is glossy black and can be positioned and remain in the folio all the time. I used the case with and without this shell piece, but preferred using it without it so I could easily pop out my naked iPhone X for a smaller package.

Above this 3M adhesive pad is a cutout for the dual rear cameras, just like the cutout on the Timberline case.

There are four card slots on the left side with a long pocket behind them for cash. The bottom card pocket has a window for viewing with an opening to make it easy to slide it up and out of the front pocket. Given that my iPhone X supports Apple Pay and it is accessible at many retail outlets, I still need to carry my driver’s license, transit card, and work access card so this case is perfect for all of these essentials.

Opening the front flap of the folio turns the display on while closing it turns off the display. I was a bit surprised to see that wireless charging works through the case since it seemed like the leather was too thick for that, but it works just fine.

The stitching is created with UV-resistant marine grade thread so you can trust it will last for a long time. Actually, Pad and Quill cases come with a 25-year leather warranty, which is much longer than you can ever expect your iPhone X to last. There is also a 30-day money-back guarantee so there is no risk in buying this high quality case. The leather will patina over time, giving it character and an unique look and feel.

iPhone Case Deals: A rare chance to save on leather iPhone 8 cases

Perhaps the most galling part of the smartphone buying experience is the need to fork out more money to protect it from the inevitable drops and spills.

It’s especially tough to take when Apple insists on charging a whopping $49.99 for its official leather iPhone 7 Plus and iPhone 8 Plus cases.

Thankfully, Amazon is here to ease the pain with a modest, but significant discount on the leather cases, in a choice of four colours.

Buy now: Apple iPhone 7 Plus / 8 Plus leather case for $42.49 (save $13%)

You can grab the cases in black, midnight blue, saddle brown and even the Product (RED) option. All of the other colors in the range remain at $49.99.

There are also savings to be had on the regular iPhone 8 / iPhone 7 leather cases which are now available from $38.24, down from the list price of $45.

Buy now: Apple iPhone 7/8 official leather case for $38.24

The open-faced, Apple-designed cases hug the iPhone’s body without adding too much girth to the handset.

“It’s made from specially tanned and finished European Leather, so the outside feels soft to the touch and develops a natural patina over time,” the product description states. Fancy.

The discounted price brings the price closer to the silicone version, which is now $35.99 on Amazon.
